Summer 2024 Internship Tales (Week 1)
I'm interning this summer! Here is a look at the articles published in The Standard newspaper written by yours truly!
In the nine weeks between June and July, you might notice the article production here on the website is slightly less proactive compared to the past. That is because I am interning for the Standard newspaper here in Hong Kong, a reputable free media outlet under management by the media company Sing Tao.
For the articles that were published this week, the first one written by yours truly that was printed out in the Wednesday newspaper concerns Chief Executive John Lee’s announcement that a study on ride-hailing platforms will be released next month, as tensions from the taxi industry have boiled over concerning companies like Uber have been affecting their businesses. Plus, given the legality of services provided by Uber are technically illegal, there are also revelations that the company is lobbying lawmakers to legalize its practices.
On Thursday, the article that was published looked into a record-breaking satisfaction rate of 92.2% for primary school choices, while some unsatisfied parents have been engaged in “door-knocking” as a last-ditch attempt for parents to get their children into a better school.
By Friday’s paper, my article concerned once again with the taxi industry. Ambassadors have been posted in numerous busy taxi stands in Hong Kong to remind taxi drivers to be polite when the general public has become more dissatisfied by the bad service and attitudes from cabbies in recent days.
Stay tuned for what comes next in week 2! Hopefully, there’s nothing big happening in Hong Kong!
